Choosing the Right Chandelier Hanging Kit For Your Home

3 min read

A chandelier is a beautiful way to accent your space. It adds a touch of elegance to any room and can bring out the best in your design. There are many different shapes and styles of chandeliers to choose from. But how do you know which one will work best for your home?

Choosing the right size of chandelier for your home involves measuring your room. There are some general rules of thumb to help you determine the size that will fit the room best. You also need to consider where you are going to hang it and whether you want a round or rectangular fixture.

If you have a round table, your chandelier should be 30 to 34 inches above the top of the table. This will give the table enough light to be comfortable to work at and prevent glare from the fixture.

For tables that are rectangular or square, your chandelier should be about the width of the table. A wide chandelier will make the room look larger, while a narrow chandelier will make the room look smaller.

To decide on the right size of chandelier for your home, you will need to measure the height of the ceiling and the length of your dining table. This will allow you to determine how high to hang the chandelier and how long to attach the chain.

The ceiling height should be at least 7 feet from the floor, if it is in a foyer or two-story great room. If it is in a bedroom or other area where you do not want the bottom of the chandelier to be seen by guests, you will need to install the chain higher than this.

Once you have determined the height of your chandelier, you will need to find a ceiling box that is large enough to accommodate it. You may need to use a hickey to make the transition between the ceiling box and the chandelier.

Chandeliers can weigh up to 400 pounds, and a professional electrician must be hired to install them because of the complexity of the wiring. You can learn how to install a chandelier on your own, but the process is time-consuming and requires expertise.

You should also hire a professional to make any necessary structural changes to your ceiling to support the weight of the chandelier. A ceiling that is not constructed to hold a chandelier’s weight will be weak and susceptible to collapse.

For your safety, do not hang a chandelier over a fireplace or a mantel. You should also remove any existing fixtures to allow for easy installation of a new fixture.

If you have a staircase in your home, it is important to place the bottom of the chandelier at a safe distance from your footpath. Ideally, the bottom of the fixture should be at least 4 feet from your footpath, depending on the staircase.

Another helpful guideline is to make the bottom of the chandelier at least 6″ above your head when you’re kneeling on a stool or chair. This will ensure that you are not getting too close to the chandelier, preventing any injury from falling on your head.
